Special Report: How Lavun LGA is taming the rising cases of Malaria

Published on

There had been a high mortality rate among children in Lavun Local Government Area due to the rising cases of Malaria. Lavun LGA is in Niger State, North Central Nigeria. However, the local government area is taming the fatal cases of the disease through multiple approaches with support from the Federal and State Governments in conjunction with local and international organizations.

Mallam Sani Jibrin, Lavun Local Government Malaria Control Desk officer said the approaches included mass distribution of insecticide-treated nets every three years, particularly to pregnant women and children under five. Another method, he said was the house-to-house distribution of seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention drugs during the (5) Five months of rainy season to children between 3 months to 5 years old. Other measures, he said malaria prevention in pregnancy through intermittent preventive treatment for women between 3-4 months of pregnancy.

Similarly, to control and prevent malaria cases, people are always advised to visit any of the 67 health facilities spread across the 12 political wards of the local government area to seek medical attention in case of any Malaria signs and other cases of ill health.

Corroborating Mallam Sani Jibrin, Comrade Yunusa Abdullahi, member of Lavun Community Health Initiative, and Mallama Hassana Ibrahim a mother with 4 children said they do receive treated mosquito nets and drugs through Lavun Malaria Control office.

Between 2019 and 2021, Malaria diagnostic cases used to be around 85%, but with all these measures and interventions, the cases have dropped to 26%. With the support received from Donor agencies, Lavun Community health initiative, and faith-based organizations by the year 2024, Mal. Sani added.

Also, the Malaria case fatal rate, primarily the mortality rate in a year used to be around 136 cases of death, but now dropped to 39 cases in the year 2024, Sani further explains.

Hajiya Fatima Usman, a health Educator in Lavun Local Government Area, added that in 2020, there was a high mortality rate resulting from malaria, particularly in children, but with all these initiatives, interventions, and collaborations, the cases have dropped tremendously.

Notwithstanding these successes, there are some hard-to-reach areas, which limit the distribution of these materials. Sadly also, some people would collect these items but use them not.
