The House at its plenary of today received the Deputy Managing Director of Abuja Electricity, Distribution Company ( AEDC) who appeared on the floor of the House to explain the rationale behind the poor and erratic supply of Electricity Across the State.
The Hon. Members demanded to know why the poor Electricity supply across Niger State in addition to playing host to four hydro electricity dams, accounting for about 60 percent of electricity generation in the country, saying there is no justification why the state cannot enjoy a minimum of 18 hours of electricity in a day.
While responding to the questions the chief operating officer claimed that the distribution company realized only 60 percent of energy supply to the people in the state, adding that the company is losing enormous energy as a result of non-payment of energy consumed by the people.
He pointed out that AEDC as a private company buys the energy from the transmission company to sell to the public, adding that due to lack of payment, the company was losing enormous resources…
According to him, the consumers in the state owe AEDC well over #3 billion, describing the debt as huge.
Rt. Hon. Barr. Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji told the management of the distribution company that since the consumers in the state could not meet their contractual agreement in the area of payment as the reason for the present poor power supply, the state is ready to pull out of the AEDC-controlled states.
Barr. Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji said that is the wish of our people that we are representing, stressing that we want to try another Disco and compare.
Barr. Sarkin Daji further moved a motion that as representatives of the people, the 27 Lawmakers have unanimously resolved to mandate the Farmer governor to pull the state out of the AEDC and join another Disco.
The Deputy Speaker, Hon Afiniki Eunice Dauda who presided over today’s plenary of the House through a voice vote adopted the motion of Rt. Hon. Barr. Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji as moved.
